On 22nd November Merton Chamber of Commerce came together with Love Wimbledon to host a workshop on GDPR. With a panel of experts speaking, the questions from the audience flowed, proving that this new legislation is something that all businesses have to get to grips with and now is the time to start reviewing your processes and policies if you haven’t already. The advice included taking control of your own data (don’t rely on third parties); to follow best practice and take common sense steps to say what you are doing and why, in order to mitigate your risk. If phrases such as “legitimate interest” and “privacy by design” are new to you, take advantage of local experts to help you get to grips with your action plan. A great source of information is the Information Commissioner’s Office web site, www.ico.org.uk and the myth busting blog by Elizabeth Denham from the ICO. They have also launched a Helpline – 0303 123 1113.
