A once empty business centre has grown into a vibrant business community providing employment for 150 people.

1In 2009, Merton Chamber of Commerce took over the management of The Generator business centre with just nine tenants. Five years on, the centre is full with 23 tenants, employing 150 people. The Mitcham-based centre is now a dynamic business environment with a great deal of B2B services and networking between tenants.

4The Generator is an incubator providing a unique environment to support startups, entrepreneurs and small businesses looking to thrive. Several businesses have grown from startups to rapid growth businesses, including Saggiomo, software company Ancoa and Bluebird Care. ‘Bluebird Care (Merton) began as a small company with three care staff and one  office staff member, we now have over 50 care staff and five office staff, all achieved in a small space of time. We are now in a position where we can move offices, to a larger office within The Generator, where I see myself for many more years to come,’ the founder of Bluebird, Jay Patel said.

The business community is made up of accountants, solicitors, health care providers computer technicians, software developers who are working alongside an African prison charity, cartographers and map makers, commercial landscapers, seafood wholesalers, and care services for the elderly. The Generator is also home to award-winning businesses, including Rhodium Consulting, who won Merton Business of the Year at the 2015 Federation of Small Businesses London Awards and was a dual finalist at the Merton Best Business Awards. After looking for suitable premises, Rhodium Consulting moved into The Generator in January 2013, and has since grown to 5 employees including a recently appointed junior consultant on the apprenticeship scheme.

The last year has been a fantastic year full of achievements culminating in winning the Merton Business of the Year 2015 in the FSB Awards. We are delighted and hope this success will help to develop the business further as we expand into larger offices at The Generator.’

8Full onsite business support services, mentoring and consultancy are also available to tenants through an advisory team. ‘Over the past five years we have seen some great success stories, like Bluebird Care and Saggiomo Luxury Foods, who have evolved from start-ups to rapid growth businesses. All the while, they have not only had the support of The Generator management team, they have had constant access to Merton Chamber business advisers who provide services such as writing business plans, marketing advice and help to raise finance. Chamber business adviser, Kevan Dunne recently helped Saggiomo Luxury Foods secure a £45,000 grant from the EU,’ Merton Chamber Chief Executive, Diana Sterck, said.

Kev‘I’m here most days and we have an open door policy. We have helped many of our tenants grow their businesses,’ Kevan Dunne explained.

The Generator offers fully furnished offices, reception services, broadband, business support services, training workshops, maintenance, insurance, security, cleaning and waste collection. The centre also provides virtual offices and meeting room space. For more details visit www.mertonchamber.co.uk/thegenerator or call Clair Attwater on 020 8408 1501.
