Notification of major gas works: Merton High Street area of Merton from SGN

I am writing to make you aware of our forthcoming upgrade to our gas network in the Merton High Street area of Merton. This essential work involves the replacement of old metal gas mains with new plastic pipe to ensure we continue to provide a safe and reliable gas supply to the local area. Our contractor Forefront Utilities is undertaking this work on our behalf.
So that we can minimise disruption, we carefully consulted and planned our works in partnership with London Borough of Merton Council. We will be working at the junction of Merton High Street, the A219 Morden Road, the A238 Kingston Road and the A219 Merton Road. We have agreed to start this work on Monday 23 July, and last approximately 3 months.
To ensure everyone’s safety and to minimise disruption we need to install temporary four-way traffic lights while we carry out our work at this junction. Temporary pedestrian crossings will also be in place at the junction. Parking will be suspended on all roads around our work area to maintain sufficient road width for traffic and our equipment to pass safely.
We will be working extended hours, Mon-Fri 08:00 – 18:00 and weekends as required to complete our work as safely and quickly as possible. We are mindful of those people who live in the area, and will try to keep noisy activity to a minimum where possible.

More information and updates can be found on our dedicated project page at:

All businesses in the local area will remain open as usual. We do have a compensation scheme in place for small local businesses which suffer a genuine loss of trade because of our work. Packs are available from our website,, via the Publications section.

I understand that roadworks can be frustrating. However, the new plastic pipe has a minimum lifespan of 80 years. This means that when the work is complete, Merton residents will continue to enjoy the benefits of a safe and reliable gas supply for years to come.

Please share this information with your own stakeholders and/or anyone else you think may be impacted by our work.
