MERTON CHARITY LAUNCHES BRAND NEW FUNDRAISING EVENT: WIMBLEDON GUILD WAGGY WALK

Wimbledon Guild, the local charity that supports people across Merton, has launched a brand-new fundraising event called the Wimbledon Guild Waggy Walk.

Open to people with and without dogs, the walk will take place on the morning of Saturday 6 October on Wimbledon Common and if you book in advance, your dog goes free! Tickets are just £10 per adult, £5 per child (4-16yrs) and £25 for a family ticket, booking fees apply. Monies raised will help fund the vital work that Wimbledon Guild does to support people in Merton who are experiencing social isolation and loneliness.

Local companies already supporting the event in terms of sponsorship are Ashworth Solicitors, Pet Pavilion and H.R. Owen Maserati.

All waggy walkers will have the choice of taking part in a 4km or 7km walk, it will start and finish at the award winning, dog-friendly Hand in Hand pub on Wimbledon Common – where they will be supplying pre-event snacks and drinks.

Every dog that completes the event will receive a goody bag from Pet Pavilion – who will also offer dog grooming and spa services on the day – and an H. R. Owen Maserati sponsored commemorative rosette for each dog. The luxury car brand will also have one of their luxury cars on display.

In addition, Wimbledon Brewery and Cawston Press will be on hand to quench the thirst of happy dog owners and homemade post-walk goodies will be provided by Two Teaspoons Cookery.

Wimbledon Guild Waggy Walk is one of the charity’s main fundraising events of the year and comes at a time when the charity is seeing an increase in the number of people seeking their support, as Wendy Pridmore, chief executive, explains:

“We are delighted to add the Wimbledon Guild Waggy Walk to our fundraising event portfolio. It’s important that people have fun when raising money on our behalf and you only need to visit Wimbledon Common on a Saturday morning to see how many dogs are part of family life amongst people in Merton.

“But there is a serious side to why we need to fundraise. More and more we are seeing people who have become lonely and isolated due to everyday life situations. It may be the death of a partner, family moving away or a loss of physical health that has turned their world upside down and the consequences can be catastrophic.

“In the past year we helped over 2,100 vulnerable people who live, work or study in Merton. With our support and guidance, they managed to turn their lives around. But to provide tailored services such as outreach support, counselling, befriending, grief support, small grants as well as put on 120 activities a month and run a daily café comes at a cost.

“By taking part in our inaugural Wimbledon Guild Waggy Walk, people can enter and raise sponsorship – not compulsory, but it would be lovely if many people could do so – to help us ensure that we will always be here to support people in times of need.”

Pridmore concludes: “I am sure it will be a fabulous day for everyone involved and I would encourage people to not ‘paws’ for thought and enter their family and dog today!”
