Major new half-marathon set to launch in Merton
A new closed-road half-marathon is set to launch in the London Borough of Merton in spring 2027, following a partnership between Merton Council and the Great Run Company, organisers of the Great North Run.
The event will see thousands of runners take on a 13.1-mile route through Morden, Wimbledon and Mitcham, passing parks and some of the borough’s most recognisable sporting locations. The race will start and finish in Morden Park, benefiting from strong transport links via the Northern Line.
The half-marathon forms part of Merton’s ambition to become London’s Borough of Sport, with the event designed to encourage participation across all ages and abilities. Alongside the main race, there will be opportunities for community involvement including fundraising for local charities, a schools challenge and a free 5k event.
Beyond the sporting impact, the event is expected to deliver clear economic benefits. An independent economic impact study forecasts an annual boost of up to £1.7m for local businesses, supporting high streets, hospitality, retail and transport services across the borough.
