Mitcham Town Takeover

Written byNatasha Morgan

The Towards Employment team at Merton Council are taking over 1 day, Saturday 9th of December, of an exciting 3-day event taking place in Mitcham town centre.

They want our day to celebrate the diversity of culturally traditions across the borough and further highlight Merton’s ethos of keeping ‘Merton United’.

In order to do this, they need your help! They have 10 stalls that they want to turn-over to community groups/members of the community who are able to showcase traditional food, drink, crafts and gifts that are representative of their culture. While they can sell these items, for all food and drink stalls there needs to be enough tasters to give people an idea of what is on offer.

The stalls are COMPLETELY FREE! And any income generated goes directly to the stall holder. Deadline for stall holders to register interest with us about participating is Tuesday 31st October 2023 – email: towardsemployment@merton.gov.uk

They want a really good range of traditions and cultures represented so please do share this with any of your contacts – they do not have to be Merton residents or even Merton based.

They also asks that people share any traditional Christmas carols or celebratory songs which Flex FM will mix and include in a Merton United playlist to further celebrate our diversity!

There is also an opportunity for paid work experience across these 3 days for those aged 16-25. They would support with stall assisting, managing the ice rink, capturing content on the day etc.

It’s going to be a fun and festive event including:

  • Santa’s grotto
  • Makers and cultural market
  • Live music played and broadcast by Flex FM
  • Food
  • Ice rink

If there’s anything you’d like to get involved with or have anyone interested in any of the opportunities mentioned please email us: towardsemployment@merton.gov.uk
